in motion | the fundraiser
In 1997, The Full Monty told the story of a group of unemployed Sheffield steelworkers who, facing the loss of their livelihoods, decided to take collective action — forming a male striptease act and putting on a one-off show. The film's charm lay not in the spectacle but in the proposition: that a community of like-minded people, stripped of conventional means, might find unconventional ways to achieve their goal.
With the transformation of Hackney Downs School underway and funds needed to sustain it, the final year students of the Bachelor of Arts in Editorial and Advertising Photography did exactly that. For one night only, in Rochester KIAD’s popular student bar, they staged a burlesque fundraiser. It was not a triumph of high art, or choreography for that matter — but it was enormously entertaining, warmly supported, and paid for white paint, screws, nails, and all the nuts and bolts of realising an extraordinary exhibition space.
