The Family Album was a collection of images about the role of women within the family, and within society, over the past 130 years. To show it at In Motion, I decorated a room to feel like a grandparents' lounge: I painted the walls, stained the floor, hung shelves and curtains, and brought in furniture and ornaments to transport the audience into a familiar space. The images sat in photo albums and frames around the room, so that the audience felt they were visiting a relative and going through their family photographs. Everyone worked hard on site, in a short space of time, to get the space looking slick and ready. The Private View was a great night.

I loved the BA Photography course at Kent Institute of Art and Design (KIAD). The facilities and the teachers were inspirational, and I came away having learnt as much about myself as about art and photography. Learning alongside international students opened my eyes to different cultures and backgrounds.

After graduating I was selected to show The Family Album at the Hereford Photography Festival in 2001, in a similar installation to the one at In Motion, as part of the "Young British Artists" exhibition alongside Rankin, Tom Hunter and Zed Nelson. The show travelled on to Herten in Germany for the Fototage International. I then worked as a printer at the Imperial War Museum in London, followed by a photographer in a portrait studio. More recently, alongside being a busy mum, I work as a travel photographer and travel writer.

Watching the In Motion films back brought great memories, and it was good to see some of my fellow students' work and faces again.

Over the past year I have returned to The Family Album and added a new series to the collection. Since I first made the work my role within the family has changed remarkably — I am a wife and mother now — and my life has changed from those initial interpretations. Resuming the project at this later stage casts a credible yet innovative perspective on family photography.
